Story
Chongqing is divided into three lobes of varying sizes that extend southwest, northeast, and southeast. Central Chongqing city's districts occupy the southwestern lobe and are surrounded by suburban districts. Chongqing has a long and illustrious history as well as a diverse culture. The surrounding districts' spacious gardens and beautiful residences help to alleviate the crowded conditions in the city's central area.
Chongqing had narrow streets and densely packed housing. The contours of the hills were followed by streets and lanes. In the poorer residential areas, the houses were made of bamboo, wood, or thatch, while in the wealthier areas, the houses were made of brick. There was a lot of traffic in every direction. When the city became the seat of the Nationalist government, a vigorous modernization program was implemented. The city wall was mostly demolished to make way for new streets, which were graded and widened. The rapid expansion of the sections west of the Old City was prompted by the enormous demand for housing created by an influx of government workers and refugees.
