The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was first built in the 12th century and was a Romanesque building. The 15th century was Gothic. What we see now is a Baroque building that was rebuilt due to earthquake damage in the 17th century. The altar was also built in 1747. There is a statue of the Virgin Mary in the center of the altar, next to a statue of the German Emperor Henrik II and his wife Kunigunda. In addition to religious ceremonies, this church can also be used as a concert hall.
The church's fame comes not from its elaborate Baroque architecture, but from the bell tower's wishing bell. The bell tower is 57 meters high and has three bells. It was built in the fifteenth century and was rebuilt several times due to several earthquakes and lightning strikes in 1688. The wishing bell was cast by Franciscus Patavinus in 1534, with a diameter of 66 cm, a height of 56 cm and a weight of 178 kg.
Legend has it that the wish will come true if the bell is tolled three times in honor of the Virgin Mary.
